THE PLIGHT OF AN ORGANIC WINEMAKER

I am a member of the Dropt Valley Bee Keepers (or l'Association d' Apiculteurs du Vallee du Dropt) and our secretary Sally has sent the following link to us all together with a short explanation as to the background.

Emmanuel Giboulout is an organic winemaker who has refused to use a chemical (non-organic) treatment against a particular insect pest known in French as a cicadelle. This chemical is also highly toxic to honey bees and other important pollinating insects so its widespread use could be catastrophic to the ecosystem . Emmanuel uses organic alternatives to control the cicadelle and is aware that the insect is not a prevalent in his locality, so he is confident that his actions are not risking the livelyhood of other winemakers or are allowing the spread of the pest which is a vector for a vineyard disease called la flavescence dorée

Despite this, the authorities have launched a criminal prosecution against him and he faces jail or a massive fine. This sends several alarming messages to the world - it discourages organic farmers and smacks of disproportionality.

Please have a look at the video (in French) and, if you agree with his cause, sign a petition supporting his actions.
